No fewer than thirteen individuals perish and ninety-eight wounded in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's key government projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” affirmed the national leader.

The president reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term ended the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its duties in public infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated rate, defying expectations to be partially opened before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled significant questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party called for an immediate halt in the building and running of all such projects.

This halt was proposed until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for immediate answers."

In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in total compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these national projects.
